Data output by this GPS receiver include: (1) latitude/longitude/altitude; (2) velocity; (3) date/time; and (4) satellite and receiver status. An internal rechargeable Lithium-ion battery sustains the internal clock and memory and is recharged during normal operation. Its compact design is ideal for applications with space limitations.

THE CONDITIONS Succes with GOOGLE

In another post Google as a Black Box Giacomo proposed that we talk too much theory and not enough application of it. So, lets skip the theory and get to what I know works from time proven methods on Google. I know the following system works 100% of the time with Google to attain rankings across a wide range of keywords. This is what I do with clients to build a successful site and has worked every time. The level of success will depend largely on the subject matter, it's potential audience, and it's level of competition on the net.

The following will build a successful site in 1 years time via Google alone. It can be done faster if you are a real go getter, or everyones favorite a self starter.

A) Prep work and begin building content. Long before the domain name is settled on, start putting together notes to build at least a 100 page site. That's just for openers. That's 100 pages of real content, as opposed to link pages, resource pages, about/copyright/tos...etc eg: fluff pages.

B) Domain name:
Easily brandable. You want "google.com" and not "mykeyword.com". Keyword domains are out - branding and name recognition are in - big time in. The value of keywords in a domain name have never been less to se's. Learn the lesson of "goto.com" becomes "Overture.com" and why they did it. It's one of the most powerful gut check calls I've ever seen on the internet. That took serious resolve and nerve to blow away several years of branding. (that is a whole 'nother article, but learn the lesson as it applies to all of us).

C) Site Design:
The simpler the better. Rule of thumb: text content should out weight the html content. The pages should validate and be usable in everything from Lynx to leading edge browsers. eg: keep it close to html 3.2 if you can. Spiders are not to the point they really like eating html 4.0 and the mess that it can bring. Stay away from heavy: flash, dom, java, java script. Go external with scripting languages if you must have them - there is little reason to have them that I can see - they will rarely help a site and stand to hurt it greatly due to many factors most people don't appreciate (search engines distaste for js is just one of them).
Arrange the site in a logical manner with directory names hitting the top keywords you wish to hit.
You can also go the other route and just throw everything in root (this is rather controversial, but it's been producing good long term results across many engines).
Don't clutter and don't spam your site with frivolous links like "best viewed" or other counter like junk. Keep it clean and professional to the best of your ability.

Learn the lesson of Google itself - simple is retro cool - simple is what surfers want.

Speed isn't everything, it's almost the only thing. Your site should respond almost instantly to a request. If you get into even 3-4 seconds delay until "something happens" in the browser, you are in long term trouble. That 3-4 seconds response time may vary for site destined to live in other countries than your native one. The site should respond locally within 3-4 seconds (max) to any request. Longer than that, and you'll lose 10% of your audience for every second. That 10% could be the difference between success and not.

The pages:

D) Page Size:
The smaller the better. Keep it under 15k if you can. The smaller the better. Keep it under 12k if you can. The smaller the better. Keep it under 10k if you can - I trust you are getting the idea here. Over 5k and under 10k. Ya - that bites - it's tough to do, but it works. It works for search engines, and it works for surfers. Remember, 80% of your surfers will be at 56k or even less.

E) Content:
Build one page of content and put online per day at 200-500 words. If you aren't sure what you need for content, start with the Overture keyword suggester and find the core set of keywords for your topic area. Those are your subject starters.

F) Density, position, yada...
Simple old fashioned seo from the ground up.
Use the keyword once in title, once in description tag, once in a heading, once in the url, once in bold, once in italic, once high on the page, and hit the density between 5 and 20% (don't fret about it). Use good sentences and speel check it ;-) Spell checking is becoming important as se's are moving to auto correction during searches. There is no longer a reason to look like you can't spell (unless you really are phonetically challenged).

G) Outbound Links:
From every page, link to one or two high ranking sites under that particular keyword. Use your keyword in the link text (this is ultra important for the future).

H) Insite Cross links.
(cross links in this context are links WITHIN the same site)
Link to on topic quality content across your site. If a page is about food, then make sure it links it to the apples and veggies page. Specifically with Google, on topic cross linking is very important for sharing your pr value across your site. You do NOT want an "all star" page that out performs the rest of your site. You want 50 pages that produce 1 referral each a day and do NOT want 1 page that produces 50 referrals a day. If you do find one page that drastically out produces the rest of the site with Google, you need to off load some of that pr value to other pages by cross linking heavily. It's the old share the wealth thing.

I) Put it Online.
Don't go with virtual hosting - go with a stand alone ip.
Make sure the site is "crawlable" by a spider. All pages should be linked to more than one other page on your site, and not more than 2 levels deep from root. Link the topic vertically as much as possible back to root. A menu that is present on every page should link to your sites main "topic index" pages (the doorways and logical navigation system down into real content).
Don't put it online before you have a quality site to put online. It's worse to put a "nothing" site online, than no site at all. You want it flushed out from the start.

Go for a listing in the ODP. If you have the budget, then submit to Looksmart and Yahoo. If you don't have the budget, then try for a freebie on Yahoo (don't hold your breath).

J) Submit
Submit the root to: Google, Fast, Altavista, WiseNut, (write Teoma), DirectHit, and Hotbot. Now comes the hard part - forget about submissions for the next six months. That's right - submit and forget.

K) Logging and Tracking:
Get a quality logger/tracker that can do justice to inbound referrals based on log files (don't use a lame graphic counter - you need the real deal). If your host doesn't support referrers, then back up and get a new host. You can't run a modern site without full referrals available 24x7x365 in real time.

L) Spiderlings:
Watch for spiders from se's. Make sure those that are crawling the full site, can do so easily. If not, double check your linking system (use standard hrefs) to make sure the spider found it's way throughout the site. Don't fret if it takes two spiderings to get your whole site done by Google or Fast. Other se's are pot luck and doubtful that you will be added at all if not within 6 months.

M) Topic directories.
Almost every keyword sector has an authority hub on it's topic. Go submit within the guidelines.

N) Links
Look around your keyword sector in Googles version of the ODP. (this is best done AFTER getting an odp listing - or two). Find sites that have links pages or freely exchange links. Simply request a swap. Put a page of on topic, in context links up your self as a collection spot.
Don't freak if you can't get people to swap links - move on. Try to swap links with one fresh site a day. A simple personal email is enough. Stay low key about it and don't worry if site Z won't link with you - they will - eventually they will.

O) Content.
One page of quality content per day. Timely, topical articles are always the best. Try to stay away from to much "bloggin" type personal stuff and look more for "article" topics that a general audience will like. Hone your writing skills and read up on the right style of "web speak" that tends to work with the fast and furious web crowd.

Lots of text breaks - short sentences - lots of dashes - something that reads quickly.

Most web users don't actually read, they scan. This is why it is so important to keep low key pages today. People see a huge overblown page by random, and a portion of them will hit the back button before trying to decipher it. They've got better things to do that waste 15 seconds (a stretch) at understanding your whiz bang flash menu system. Because some big support site can run flashed out motorhead pages, that is no indication that you can. You don't have the pull factor they do.

Use headers, and bold standout text liberally on your pages as logical separators. I call them scanner stoppers where the eye will logically come to rest on the page.

P) Gimmicks.
Stay far away from any "fades of the day" or anything that appears spammy, unethical, or tricky. Plant yourself firmly on the high ground in the middle of the road.

Q) Link backs
When YOU receive requests for links, check the site out before linking back with them. Check them through Google and their pr value. Look for directory listings. Don't link back to junk just because they asked. Make sure it is a site similar to yours and on topic.

R) Rounding out the offerings:
Use options such as Email-a-friend, forums, and mailing lists to round out your sites offerings. Hit the top forums in your market and read, read, read until your eyes hurt you read so much.
Stay away from "affiliate fades" that insert content on to your site.

S) Beware of Flyer and Brochure Syndrome
If you have an ecom site or online version of bricks and mortar, be careful not to turn your site into a brochure. These don't work at all. Think about what people want. They aren't coming to your site to view "your content", they are coming to your site looking for "their content". Talk as little about your products and yourself as possible in articles (raise eyebrows...yes, I know).

T) Build one page of content per day.
Head back to the Overture suggestion tool to get ideas for fresh pages.

U) Study those logs.
After 30-60 days you will start to see a few referrals from places you've gotten listed. Look for the keywords people are using. See any bizarre combinations? Why are people using those to find your site? If there is something you have over looked, then build a page around that topic. Retro engineer your site to feed the search engine what it wants.
If your site is about "oranges", but your referrals are all about "orange citrus fruit", then you can get busy building articles around "citrus" and "fruit" instead of the generic "oranges".
The search engines will tell you exactly what they want to be fed - listen closely, there is gold in referral logs, it's just a matter of panning for it.

V) Timely Topics
Nothing breeds success like success. Stay abreast of developments in your keyword sector. If big site "Z" is coming out with product "A" at the end of the year, then build a page and have it ready in October so that search engines get it by December. eg: go look at all the Xbox and XP sites in Google right now - those are sites that were on the ball last summer.

W) Friends and Family
Networking is critical to the success of a site. This is where all that time you spend in forums will pay off. pssst: Here's the catch-22 about forums: lurking is almost useless. The value of a forum is in the interaction with your fellow colleagues and cohorts. You learn long term by the interaction - not by just reading.
Networking will pay off in link backs, tips, email exchanges, and it will put you "in the loop" of your keyword sector.

X) Notes, Notes, Notes
If you build one page per day, you will find that brain storm like inspiration will hit you in the head at some magic point. Whether it is in the shower (dry off first), driving down the road (please pull over), or just parked at your desk, write it down! 10 minutes of work later, you will have forgotten all about that great idea you just had. Write it down, and get detailed about what you are thinking. When the inspirational juices are no longer flowing, come back to those content ideas. It sounds simple, but it's a life saver when the ideas stop coming.

Y) Submission check at six months
Walk back through your submissions and see if you got listed in all the search engines you submitted to after six months. If not, then resubmit and forget again. Try those freebie directories again too.

Z) Build one page of quality content per day.
Starting to see a theme here? Google loves content, lots of quality content. Broad based over a wide range of keywords. At the end of a years time, you should have around 400 pages of content. That will get you good placement under a wide range of keywords, generate recip links, and overall position your site to stand on it's own two feet.

Do those 26 things, and I guarantee you that in ones years time you will call your site a success. It will be drawing between 500 and 2000 referrals a day from search engines. Mario Kart Wii (マリオカ�トWii, Mario Kāto Wī^?) is a racing game developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development and published by Nintendo for the Wii console. It is the sixth installment in the Mario Kart series (excluding the two arcade games) and the second Mario Kart title to use the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. The game was released worldwide throughout April 2008, but one year later in South Korea. Every copy of the game is packaged with the Wii Wheel accessory, which is designed to house the Wii Remote to allow more intuitive and conventional steering.

Changes from its predecessor, Mario Kart DS, include motorbikes and support for up to twelve racers online. Like other games in the Mario Kart series, it involves various characters from several Mario games racing each other on tracks themed from locations in the Mario series. Support for the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection allows racing against other players from around the world, and online competitions and results are available by installing the Mario Kart Channel to the Wii Menu.

Mario Kart Wii was first shown at E3 2007. It has been positively received by critics; while not revolutionary, the online capability and the large number of tracks, characters and karts has been praised. The game had a commercially successful launch in every region, and sold over a million copies in both Japan and the United States in less than a month.

In Mario Kart Wii, players choose a character from a roster consisting of up to 24 characters and from 36 vehicles, separated into three different weight classes. A character's weight decides the available types of karts and motorbikes, and their performance on the tracks. Each vehicle has seven different parameters for characteristics: speed, weight, acceleration, handling, drift, off-road, and mini-turbo.^[1] Mario Kart Wii includes 32 different tracks, including 16 new tracks, four tracks from Mario Kart 64, four from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, four from Mario Kart DS, and two each from Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart: Super Circuit, and up to twelve characters can participate in a race.^[2] Players obtain items by driving through item boxes, which can be used for either defense, offense, or for powering up the engine. New items from Mario platform games are introduced, including the "Mega Mushroom" from New Super Mario Bros., which allows the character to grow enormous in size and flatten opposing characters, and the "POW BLOCK" from Mario Bros., which allows the character to send a shockwave to the other characters, spinning them out of control.^[3]

Mario Kart Wii features 24 selectable characters, (26 counting the two outfits available for the Mii, the digital avatar created by Nintendo) more than any of its predecessors. Twelve characters are available from the beginning; the other twelve and the two Mii variants become available after finishing certain elements of the game. The cast of characters includes 19 returning characters from the series and six newcomers; Baby Peach, Funky Kong, user-created Mii's, Rosalina, Dry Bowser, and Baby Daisy, a new character in the Mario series. There are eight characters of each weight class. The Mii's weight class depends on its height and weight, and its creator's favorite color affects the color scheme of its clothing, while the gender affects the color scheme of their vehicles.

Control schemes

The game is packaged with the Wii Wheel, a peripheral that acts as the primary control scheme. There are also schemes that allow for the user to be able to use the Wii Wheel, the Wii Remote with Nunchuk, the Classic Controller, or the Nintendo GameCube controller. The ability to "snake" in previous Mario Kart games, which creates speed boosts by repeatedly drifting, has been greatly reduced in favor of a new speed boost system based on how long the player actually drifts and the angle at which they drift.^[4] While motorbikes can perform wheelies for a speed boost, they have a limited turning ability for the duration of a wheelie. Karts cannot do wheelies, but can get better boosts on drifting.^[5] Also featured is the ability to "slipstream".^[6]

Game modes

Unlike previous installments, "Grand Prix" is only available in single-player mode. The player races in a series of Grand Prix Cups against eleven computer-controlled competitors. Each cup consists of four races, and may be raced at 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, or an unlockable Mirror Mode that can be won by winning first place in the regular 150cc cups. At the end of the cup, the player is awarded a trophy based on their finishing position and a rating based upon how well they raced. Mirror Mode becomes available by completing certain elements of the game, and flips the tracks around so that right becomes left and left becomes right. This mode reappears from Mario Kart 64, Double Dash, and DS versions of the game.

In "Time Trial", players try to finish a course as quickly as possible. Like in previous games, the fastest time will be saved as a ghost, a copy of the player's performance which can be raced against. "Versus Mode" entails one to four local players racing head-to-head in a single race on any course either with or without artificial intelligence (AI) players.^[6]

The game also features "Battle Mode", consisting of "Balloon Battle" and "Coin Runners". Players are split into two teams randomly, and start on one of the ten battle courses. In Balloon Battle, each player has three balloons attached to their kart. Every time a player is hit by an opposing player, a balloon is lost, and the score for each team is altered accordingly. If a player loses all the balloons, they are given three new balloons. After the three minute time limit, the team that popped the most balloons wins. In Coin Runners, coins are scattered over the battle course. If a player drives over a coin they will pick it up, but being hit by an opposing player causes them to lose coins. The team in possession of most coins when the three minute time limit is reached wins.^[6]

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection

Mario Kart Wii allows players to race against each other through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which features online racing and battle modes, supporting up to twelve simultaneous competitors. There are three options: "worldwide", "regional", and "friends". The first two options match the player against those of a similar rank, either from around the world or their surrounding geographical region, and the third option lets the player race against listed friends and uses the friend code system. The courses are decided by a voting system where the course is randomly selected from the courses voted for by the players. When playing online for the first time players are given a skill rating of 5000 points and based on wins and losses, this increases or decreases to rank the player's skill level. The game features online text chat between players where users are able to select from a set of predetermined phrases when playing with friends.^[7]^[8]

The game has the option of installing the "Mario Kart Channel" that requires 79 blocks to the Wii Menu, which presents the current regional and worldwide rankings, and the option of sending or downloading saved time trials (ghosts) using WiiConnect24.^[9] Mario Kart Channel also offers worldwide tournaments from Nintendo.^[7] The channel enables users to check if any members of their Friend roster are currently online, and to participate in a race or battle with them.^[10]

Development

Mario Kart Wii was officially announced at the 2007 E3; the online features and the first footage of the game was shown.^[11] During Reggie Fils-Aime's presentation, he unveiled the game via a trailer that showed some of the new characters and tracks. The trailer also displayed that the game would include up to twelve simultaneous racers, and that the dual-character component featured in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! was removed. Additional details of the game were later released in conjunction with the Nintendo Fall 2007 Conference held in October 2007, where it was revealed that it would include motorbikes and the Wii Wheel. New gameplay footage from the game was also shown, and the release date was revealed to be set for spring 2008.^[12]

Producer Hideki Konno wanted to include online features for Mario Kart DS, but they were left out due to time constraints. These features would, however, be implemented in Mario Kart Wii. The developers wanted to avoid races becoming more deserted as they progressed, thus altering the online matchmaking to allow players to join a race once it is finished for participation in the next one.^[13] Konno had been proposing ideas involving BMX since Double Dash!!, but they were rejected. In Mario Kart Wii, the developers were able to incorporate motorbikes.^[13] The game was called "Mario Kart X" internally for a while, before deciding on "Mario Kart Wii".^[13] General producer Shigeru Miyamoto's inputs were limited to new aspects of play such as the Wii Wheel and battles over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.^[13] The designers tested roughly 30 different prototypes with different shapes, colors and weights, before deciding on the final Wii Wheel design.^[13]

Audio

The music was composed by Asuka Ohta and Ryo Nagamatsu, who used new interpretations of the familiar melodies from earlier games and also new material. The speaker on the Wii Remote is frequently used during gameplay, as sound effects like crashes and warning signals are emitting from it. It was during the extensive testings of the different Wii Wheel prototypes the developers decided that it would be good to have the voice actors playing the game during recording sessions.^[13]

Mario Kart Wii had a successful launch and sold 300,000 copies on the launch day in Japan alone, compared to Mario Kart DS which sold 160,000 copies on its first day and Mario Kart: Double Dash!! which sold 180,000 on its first day.^[23] In the week ending May 4, 2008, Mario Kart Wii had sold over a million copies in Japan alone, less than a month since its release in the region.^[24] In the UK, Mario Kart Wii was the best-selling video game in the week ending April 12, 2008, having "the eighth biggest opening sales week in UK software history," according to Chart-Track/ELSPA.^[25]^[26] The game dwarfed all other five Mario Wii games released up until then for the Wii combined when comparing first week sales.^[25] In the United States, Mario Kart Wii was the second best-selling video game in April 2008, selling 1.12 million copies, according to the NPD Group; putting it behind the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV and ahead of the PlayStation 3 version, both released in the same week.^[27] It ranked the fourth best-selling game of December 2008 in the United States, selling in excess of 979,000 copies.^[28] According to the NPD Group, GfK Chart-Track, and Enterbrain, the game has sold 2.409 million copies in the United States, 687,000 in the United Kingdom, and 1.601 million in Japan, respectively, for a total of 4.697 million copies sold by August 1, 2008.^[29] As of September 30, 2008, Nintendo has sold 9.53 million copies of Mario Kart Wii worldwide.^[30] As of January 4, 2009, it has sold 2,133,000 copies in Japan.^[31] It is also the fourth best-selling game of Japan in 2008.^[32] According to the NPD Group, GfK Chart-Track, and Enterbrain, the game has sold 856,000 copies in the United States, 394,000 in the United Kingdom, and 218,000 in Japan, respectively, for a total of 1.468 million copies sold in the third quarter of 2008 (July�September).^[33] It is the second best-selling game of 2008 in the United States, selling in excess of 5 million copies.^[28]

Mario Kart Wii has been received positively, especially praising the online capability and the large number of tracks, characters and karts. Joe Sinicki of Blast Magazine comments: "While it still does suffer from some of the problems of the older games, Mario Kart Wii takes the simple and accessible formula set by its predecessors and tweaks it enough to make it feel fresh and fun, creating one of the most entertaining and rewarding gaming experiences in quite some time."^[34] Official Nintendo Magazine UK claimed that the Wii Wheel worked very effectively and loved the different multiplayer modes.^[35] GameSpot producer Lark Anderson complimented that the game is easy to jump into for players of any skill level and that motorcycles provide a great alternative to go-karts^[6], and IGN commented that "Nintendo has delivered one of the best console Karts in years".^[21] Plugged In stated that the racing is easy to do and that "the Grand Prix Cup events and several team battle modes keep things interesting".

NGamer, however, claimed that the tracks are too big for local multiplayer matches. Also, IGN criticized the rubber band AI in the 150cc races of the Grand Prix^[21] and NGamer UK was disappointed that Battle mode can now only be played in teams; no free-for-all option is offered which removes the 'last man standing' element of previous Mario Kart Battle modes. Reviewers such as GameTrailers and IGN also commented that it is easy to fall from first place to last by being continuously attacked by several weapons, many of which are unavoidable, leading to a certain amount of luck in racing. This makes it more accessible for beginners, but can be extremely discouraging for skilled players.^[20]^[21] GameSpot also noted that "nostalgia doesn't save most of the classic courses from being boring".^[6]

It won multiple Wii-specific awards from IGN in its 2008 video game awards, including Best Racing Game^[36] and Best Online Multiplayer Game.^[37] IGN also nominated it for Best Family Game for the Wii.^[38]

Hands-on Wii Fit

In Wii Fit, when you start the exercise, an on-screen trainer -- either male or female depending on your preference -- gives you important advice about form, breathing, position holds, and timing. You're going to want to listen to the trainer as they offer invaluable guidance throughout your workouts and they're advice changes dynamically throughout your programs as the title measures different shifts in your form and momentum. It's pretty incredible to receive genuinely helpful guidance halfway through an instruction.

There are all sorts of other exercises, some more difficult than others. In strength training alone, which I find particularly appealing (mostly because it's not Yoga, which I seem to be incapable of showing any kind of prowess in), there's single leg extension, sideways leg lifts, arm and leg lifts, single arm stands, torso twists, rowing squats, single leg twists, lunges, push-ups and side planks, jackknifes, plank and tricep extensions, and more. In aerobics, you can partake in hula-hoop challenges, basic steps, basic runs, super hula-hoops, advanced steps, rhythm boxing, free steps and free runs. In Yoga, there's deep breathing, half moons, dances, cobras, bridges, spinal twists, shoulder stands, warrior poses, tree poses, sun salutation poses, standing knee poses, palm tree poses, chair, triangle and downward-facing dog poses. It's a ridiculously complete set of traditional exercises.

And then there are the Balance Board games. I tried a few more of these out at the event. First, though, the selection, which includes soccer heading, ski slalom, ski jump, table tilt, tightrope walk, balance bubble, penguin slide, snowboard slalom and lotus focus. I delved a little deeper into the ski jump than I ever have before and found the mini to be immensely enjoyable, both simple and addictive. To play, you place both feet on the Balance Board and lean forward, shifting most of your weight toward the front of the peripheral. The position of your feet directly moves an on-screen reticule around and your immediate goal is merely to correctly balance yourself so that the reticule moves within another on-screen circle -- the money spot. The longer you keep the reticule in there, the greater speed your character will build as he slides down the hill. And just before you reach the jump at the end, you make a jumping gesture (but don't actually jump -- Wii Fit warns before several challenges that you should never jump). Just straighten your legs very quickly and, according to one Nintendo instructor, you should even try to stand on your tiptoes, as you're likely to gain greater height. (I tried this but was unsuccessful.) It took me about two tries to really get the hang of everything, another five or so to start ranking in the top five, and three more times on top of that before I finally nabbed first place. It's not a complicated mini-game, but I have to admit that I was glued to the ski slalom as I tried for first place. I didn't want to stop playing, which is always a great sign.

The game is no joke -- you will feel the burn as you play.

I also tried out the game's tightrope and penguin slide minis and found them to be nearly as enjoyable, although altogether different in execution. In tightrope, you walk by making a walking gesture with your left and right feet -- remember, you don't really want to lift your legs; same as jumping. As you walk the tightrope, you'll need to keep the balance and avoid obstructions by jumping over them. And in penguin slide, you tilt an icy platform left and right by shifting the balance with your respective feet, the goal being to eat as many penguins as possible. All fun.

There's no doubt that Wii Fit is going to appeal to the casual crowd. (I keep saying that if Nintendo can just get the title on Oprah Winfrey, it'll be a gargantuan success.) But I like to brand myself a hardcore gamer and I have to tell you, I think the program is incredible. Is this Nintendo's "bridge" strategy in effect? Perhaps. Whatever the case, though, I'm a believer. I go to the gym regularly, but sometimes I have to force myself to leave the house. Wii Fit succeeds in that it makes exercising fun -- addictive, even. In fact, gamers strictly opposed to working up a sweat may find the exercise component invisible -- you'll be having so much fun with the mini-games that you won't even notice you're technically burning calories until you're suddenly out of breath.

Nintendo is supporting Wii Fit with an epic marketing budget and allocating more than a million units for the title's launch in the U.S. on May 19. There's nothing gimmicky about the fitness game and I think America is going to quickly find itself hooked on the Big N's

April 15, 2008 - The following account comes to readers from IGN Nintendo Team editor-in-chief Matt Casamassina, who extensively tested out the English version of Wii Fit from Nintendo's Media Summit event in San Francisco last week:

I think gamers -- hardcore or otherwise -- who still believe that Wii Fit is a gimmick, an impostor, or an all-out fake are in for a rude awakening. Whether you want to refer to it as a game or an exercise program, you will eventually have to concede, as I have, that it's the real deal. It'll give you a work out. You will sweat. Your heart will move. And you might just wake up sore the next day. I'm speaking from experience for exactly that happened to me at last week's Nintendo Media Summit, where I went hands (and feet) on the Wii Balance Board and cycled through some of the exercises and minis in Nintendo's sort-of-kind-of-game and soon-to-be-hit.

I've been through the basics of Wii Fit a dozen times before, but just in case you've been out on vacation for the last 10 months, I've provided a quick primer. Nintendo's latest "casual" or "bridge" title, set to debut on May 19 in America, takes the fundamentals of Wii Sports to the next level. Whereas the pack-in encouraged players to get off their couches and swing the Wii remote like a real tennis racket or bowl like a pro, Wii Fit challenges participants to compete in mini-workouts, the end goal being to tone muscle and hopefully burn fat. You stand on an included scale-like device called the Wii Balance Board and it very accurately measures every shift, however subtle you might make, as you battle and play through 40 different minis and exercises spread across strength training, yoga, aerobics, and balance games.

The Big N has shied away from stating that Wii Fit is a true exercise solution (and I can't really blame it when we live in a world where stupid people who accidentally break their TVs with Wii remotes will actually sue the publisher), but the fact remains, many of the challenges encapsulated within Wii Fit are hard and very taxing on your body. I'm by no means Mr. Universe, but I do go to my local gym about four times per week and I adhere to regular workout cycles, sometimes concentrating on my chest and back, other times focusing on my arms and stomach. I've been doing this for years and like to think I'm fairly well-versed in a solid exercise program. And yet, 20 minutes with Wii Fit kicked my ass, which surprised me.

Always politically correct, Nintendo has designed Wii Fit to measure your body mass index or BMI as opposed to your weight. That said, you can set the game to display your weight, too, and according to Shigeru Miyamoto, who hatched the concept, the Wii Balance Board is actually one of the most accurate scales that money can buy. I'm inclined to believe him having seen just how precisely the contraption measured my every tiny nuance of a momentum shift and movement. In addition to your BMI, which is a fancy way of describing the measurement of body fat, the title awards you with a Wii Fit Age (go figure, right?), the latter of which is based on an initial balance test. As you play Wii Fit every day, you'll want to secure and maintain a healthy age.

Right, so my primer was a little longer than I teased, but everybody needs a refresher now and again. In my recent play-through of the title, I first engaged in a strength-training exercise that was one part push-up and another part yoga. Bear in mind that I'm used to shoulder-length push-ups, but in Wii Fit, the size of the Balance Board -- about the width of a day-to-day scale -- requires that you pull your arms a little closer together like a diamond push-up. This, in case you're wondering, is considerably more difficult. Both hands are placed firmly on the Balance Board, knees still on the ground. Next, you stretch your legs out and hold your body at the high point of the push-up. Breath in and slowly lower yourself to the Board while breathing out. Now hold for one, two, three seconds. Not so bad, right? Wrong. It's about to get tricky. Now you have to keep the position while you wrap your right leg around your left, reach toward the sky with your right arm and pivot your body, shifting all of your weight on your left arm. Hold. Return to the push-up position -- smoothly now -- and repeat the process. Six times. (You can unlock higher reps as you use Wii Fit on a daily basis.)

IGN's resident not-sure-what-she-does Jessica Chobot and I competed in two different push-up competitions and somehow, against all odds, she beat me. I am not entirely sure how this happened given that her arms are no wider than soda straws, but I think it may have something to do with my form -- as I noted, I was a little wobblier than Jess due to the fact that I have weight to consider (particularly in my belly, I'm not embarrassed to admit) and Chobot practically floats. Even so, I at least finished the competition, competing all six reps. Jess, on the other hand, gave up halfway through, fell on her face and smashed her hip. That she still won remains an enigma.

There's no shortage of brain training and minigame collections on the Nintendo DS, many of which are mediocre. That's why Professor Layton and the Curious Village is such a pleasant surprise. Its marriage of story and gameplay does for brain training and minigames what Puzzle Quest did for puzzle games.

There's something happening here. What it is ain't exactly clear.

The game's story, which is told via a mix of beautiful full-motion video, as well as attractive still-scenes, follows that of Professor Layton, a man renowned for his puzzle-solving abilities. Along with his young assistant Luke, Professor Layton travels to the village of St. Mystere. Although they were initially called to the town to deal with a curiously written will and search for something known as "The Golden Apple," the duo will be faced with many other unknowns on the journey. Both the quality of the story, as well as its presentation, go a long way toward making this an adventure you'll want to see through to its satisfying conclusion--a rarity when compared to other puzzle games and minigames collections.

To solve the many mysteries in St. Mystere, you must travel around the village and speak to its inhabitants. In this aspect, Professor Layton plays similarly to a 2D point-and-click adventure. You move from one area to the next by tapping the screen. You can also tap random nooks and crannies to find hint coins, secret areas, or hidden puzzles. When you come across townspeople, you interact with them by tapping them as well. They're more than happy to help you...eventually. You see, each person has a logic puzzle that he or she needs you to solve before offering his or her assistance. Yes, this is a bit strange, but you'll learn the reason for it before all is said and done.

The story mode's 120 or so puzzles cover a wide variety of types; you'll need to move matchsticks, answer riddles, draw objects, solve math problems, place chess pieces, and much, much more. You might have to find out which suspects in a police lineup are lying, come up with a route to work for four people who don't like each other and don't want to see one other along the way, or even tackle a few puzzles where you must get a ball from one end to the other by sliding blocks around. The puzzles range from easy to difficult. While the game can get downright challenging, it rarely gets frustrating. There are no time limits, so you're free to mull things over, which often reveals an astonishingly simple solution. In fact, the way the game forces you to alternate between thinking outside the box and then hitting you with a simple puzzle that you overthink is one of the many clever ways in which the game will challenge you. But fear not, if you've pondered things from every angle and are still stuck, you can get up to three hints on each puzzle by spending hint coins that are sprinkled about the village.

Professor Layton is one of those addictive games that's incredibly hard to put down once you get into it. Thankfully, it's pretty lengthy. It should take you anywhere from 13 to 17 hours to finish the fantastic story mode, but once you're done, there's still more to do. You only need to solve about 80 or 85 puzzles to finish the game, so you'll probably want to locate and finish the remaining puzzles because they're so much fun. There are also a number of items to collect during your adventure: gizmos for a contraption, scraps of a painting, or furniture for Luke and Layton's hotel rooms. You're not likely to find all of these on your first play-through, but collecting all the items for each category unlocks bonus content, so it's likely that you'll want to go back to find them. Once you've done all that, there's a large amount of bonus content to keep you busy. For an additional challenge, you can tackle some ultradifficult puzzles not found in the story mode. But what will keep you coming back again and again are free weekly downloadable puzzles. That's right: free.

Professor Layton's puzzles range from easy to difficult, but they're always entertaining. A very nice person....

Impressive presentation is another aspect in which Professor Layton differentiates itself from other games in its genre. There's quite a bit of high-quality full-motion video, complete with voice acting--something not often seen on the DS. Environments and characters have a hand-drawn look to them and look like they came straight from an illustrated children's book. This unique style gives the game, as well as its characters, warmth and personality. The only blemish on the otherwise outstanding presentation is the audio, which consists of accordion music that is so repetitive and irritating you'll have to turn it down so you can concentrate on solving puzzles.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village combines exploration, story, and logic puzzles to make for a truly unique, entertaining, and even educational experience. Don't be fooled by the game's box art into thinking this is just some silly game for kids; it's a must-own game for any puzzle fan.

Professor Layton Sequel Coming Says Game Manual

According to the game manual for Professor Layton and the Curious Village, the second game in the trilogy should be hitting US shores soon. Game Life is reporting that like it's Japanese Counterpart, the US version of Professor Layton contains a password entry screen that can only be unlocked by playing the game's sequel. The game manual states that the secret password "will be revealed in the sequel."

Of course we have certainly been promised games before that never materialized, but I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for this one. I've played a little bit of the Japanese version and was absolutely enthralled until I couldn't get any further due to my ignorance of the language. As soon as I can finish all this writing today you can bet I'll be diving into the US version and the prospect of a sequel leaves me dancing a mad jig.

Plot

Specific order of events in the game will vary depending on choices that the player has made during the game, but the overall plot remains unchanged.

The game opens with Professor Hershel Layton and Luke driving to the town of St. Mystere by letter request of Lady Dahlia, widow of the late Baron Augustus Reinhold. The Baron has left in his last will and testament that whoever solves the mystery of the Golden Apple would inherit the Baron's fortunes, and several people have attempted and failed. The two enter the town, and find that most of the population is fond of puzzles and brain teasers, both which Layton and Luke are adept at solving. They also see a large, haphazard tower that occupies one side of town that no one can get to, but that people keep hearing strange noises emanating from at night. Layton and Luke meet Lady Dahlia, other family members including Simon, Gordon, and their servants, but before they can discuss the matter further, a loud exploding sound is heard and Dahlia's cat Claudia flees out of the door. Layton and Luke chase Claudia through town, solving puzzles along the way. Meanwhile, a strange soot covered man plots a deadly plan against the heroes. Eventually they discover the cats fondness for fish and tempt her back with one. upon returning to the mansion, Layton and Luke to find that Simon has been murdered and the case is already under investigation by Inspector Chelmey. Chelmey initially suspects the two, but as their alibi holds up, lets them go, but tells them to stay out of the murder investigation. However, Matthew tells Layton about a small gearwheel that he found in the room near Simon's body.

As Layton and Luke continue their search for the Golden Apple, they witness the kidnapping of one of Dahlia's servants, Ramon. A strange man stuffs Ramon into a bag; they give chase but are unable to catch him, though they do find another gearwheel similar to the one before. However, they are befuddled as the next day, Ramon is back as if nothing had happened. They continue to explore the town, eventually led to the town's abandoned amusement park by a young girl met at the dead end. As they explore the Ferris wheel, the sinister figure from earlier uses a remote to tear the wheel from its moorings, sending it chasing after Layton and Luke, who barely escape as the wheel smashed through a locked building. Exploring the wreckage, they find a key shaped similar to the tower, and Layton gets an idea of what's going on in the village. The two return to face Chelmey, who Layton realizes is an impostor. The man reveals himself as Layton's arch-enemy, Don Paolo, seeking the Golden Apple for himself and who tried to use the Ferris wheel to knock Layton out of the picture; Paolo escapes before Layton can capture him.

With Luke in tow, Layton heads for the tower, using the key to unlock a secret wall in the dead end. Inside, they discover the man that previously had kidnapped Ramon, named Bruno. Layton exposes the truth with Bruno's help; all the residents of St. Mystere are robots, created by the Baron and Bruno to challenge the wits of anyone seeking the Golden Apple, explaining why all the townsfolks were obsessed with puzzles. Simon wasn't murdered, only that he malfunctioned; similarly, Bruno kidnapped Ramon in order to perform repairs. Having solved the puzzle of St. Mystere, Layton and Luke climb the tower, solving puzzles and meeting minor characters along the way. Eventually, the pair reaches the top of the tower, and much to their surprise, find a beautifully-kept cottage there. Inside, the young girl from before awaits. She reveals herself as Flora, the only daughter of the Baron, and was the Golden Apple that the robots were protecting because she was the apple of her father's eye..

However, any triumph is short-lived as Don Paolo returns in a flying machine, and starts demolishing the tower. Luke escapes down the stairs, but Layton is forced to improvise a glider to take Flora and himself to safety as the tower collapses. With his helicopter malfunctioning, he drops a bag. The villain swears revenge and leaves. The three are safe in town and as Flora laughs in happiness an apple-like birthmark can be seen on her shoulder. As they regroup at the Reinhold manor, Layton realizes that there's more than just Flora as the treasure, as the birthmark points to the Baron's riches. Luke finds a switch on the portrait of Flora which leads to a secret room filled with gold.

A voice recording from the Baron congratulates those that had followed the clues, and tells Flora to take the treasure, warning that if it is taken, all the robots will stop functioning. Flora opts to leave it as a way to repay the robots for their years of service to protect her and as her friends. As the game ends, Layton, Luke and Flora leave St. Mystere, having not taken the treasure, allowing the residents to continue on with their lives. Flora leaves the village with Layton and Luke. The three (and other characters) are shown laughing and living together during the game credits.

As the first part of a trilogy, the main story ends with a "to be continued" message with a picture of Luke and Layton at a train station instead of using the Laytonmobile.

Gameplay

The Curious Village is a puzzle game and, with the player controlling the movements of Professor Layton and his young assistant Luke around the village of St. Mystere to locate the "Golden Apple" and solving other mysteries that arise during their searching. St. Mystere is divided into several sections, which the player can move between, though some sections are inaccessible until certain parts of the story have been advanced or they have met a minimum requirement of number of puzzles solved. The player can talk to characters or investigate objects on screen by tapping them. In many cases, the characters will ask Layton and Luke to try to solve a puzzle; there are also hidden puzzles that can be found by investigating certain objects. As the story progresses, if the player has not solved some of the puzzles made available by talking to characters, these will be collected at a special location so the player may still attempt them.

Puzzles include brain teasers, sliding puzzles, logic puzzles and others. The player is presented with the puzzle and the value of the puzzle in "picarats", and is given unlimited time to solve it. Each puzzle has three hints available for it, but the player must spend one "hint coin" to see each hint. Hint coins are limited; the player starts with ten, and more are available by searching around the village. Once the player feels he has the answer, he enters it, either by selecting an answer, drawing a circle around a specific part, or entering the answer through character recognition on the DS's touchscreen. If the player is correct, the picarats are added to his total score, and he is sometimes rewarded with an item. If the player is incorrect, they can retry the puzzle indefinitely, though the first two times they are wrong, the value of the puzzle will decrease by approximately ten percent each time. Optionally, a player can quit a puzzle at no cost and try another, though certain puzzles are mandatory to progress. Once a puzzle is completed, the player may retry it at any time via the game's menus.

As a reward for completing a puzzle, the player may earn one of three rewards. Gizmos are collected in order to create a robot dog that can help sniff out hint coins for the player. Pieces of a portrait can be assembled as in a jigsaw puzzle. Pieces of furniture can be distributed between Layton's and Luke's rooms at the inn to try to satisfy the overall happiness of both. By completing all 120 puzzles in the main game and each of these additional puzzles, the player can access 15 additional puzzles accessible as a bonus item in the game. The game is compatible with Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, allowing players to connect to the internet and unlock new puzzles. The first unlockable puzzle was made available on the day of the game's Japanese release, and one new key has been released every week thereafter. A new key is released every Sunday. There is also a "The Hidden Door" that is only available after the player finds a unique code in the sequel Professor Layton and Pandora's Box that contains development art of the characters in the game.

How Affiliate Link Cloaker Works
Affiliate Link Cloaker is a program created to help stop affiliate link hijacking and affiliate link bypassing. Affiliate Link Cloaker was designed to hide affiliate links.
This page explains what these issues are, how the Affiliate Link Cloaker software works, why Affiliate Link Cloaker is not completely effective and how you can do the same thing for free.
It also explains why I don't do any of this on my website.

What Is the Problem?
Affiliate Link Cloaker is motivated by the idea that if you use affiliate programs to sell product, then people are ripping you off. The idea that you are being ripped off comes in two flavors: affiliate link hijacking and affiliate link bypassing.
Affiliate link bypassing refers to someone just removing your affiliate link to go directly into the selling site. For example, suppose that you note a book on my site and take the link to Amazon to check it out. Once there, you decide to buy the book, but instead of just buying it based on my link, you decide that you don't want me to get a commission, so you leave Amazon, go back in and once there search for and buy the book. When you do that, you have bypassed my affiliate link and I do not get a commission.
Affiliate link hijacking refers to someone using their own affiliate link to buy a product. For example, suppose that you note a book on my site and take the link to Amazon to check it out. Once there, you decide to buy the book, but instead of just buying it based on my link, you copy the information of the URL and then substitute your own affiliate link. Then you use that new link to go and buy the book. When you do that, I do not get a commission and you do.
These two things bother some people so much that they will go to some interesting lengths to try to hide or "cloak" the affiliate link to prevent both of these. (I'll explain later how I feel about these, and why they don't bother me so much.)
One product that does this is called the Affiliate Link Cloaker.
What Is Affiliate Link Cloaker?
Affiliate Link Cloaker is a software tool that creates a "frames page".
Frames are a way of showing more than one "real" page inside of a browser. You go to one URL, and once you are there, you see several actual, real pages. This is most commonly used by people who want to have their navigation buttons on one page and their content on another page. Then when you click the navigation buttons, the content page changes, but the navigation buttons do not.
But frames pages can also be used to "hide" a page. To do this you create a frames page that doesn't do anything except display another page inside of it. When you do this, the browser displays the URL of the outer or framing page and doesn't show the URL of the page being displayed inside.
The Affiliate Link Cloaker uses this technique. It creates a page on your site that is a frames page that actually displays another page inside of it.
So Can I See An Example?
Ok. I've created a page that "cloaks" the Amazon.com site. (Note that I'm only doing this as an example and that the cloaking is fully disclosed in the title.)

Check it out. It shows my URL and the Amazon.com site.
Then click on View / Source and you can see the complete source for the page to see how it is done.
(Note: do not use "right click" then "view source". Go to the browser command buttons at the top and click "View" then "Source".)
Wouldn't That Be Easy to Figure Out?
Sure. Anyone who had the smarts to hit View / Source would see the frames code and would also see the URL being displayed inside the frame.
So, the Affiliate Link Cloaker "cloaks" the URL by expressing it in "Unicode" or "HTML Unicode". Instead of using the natural characters, the Affiliate Link Cloaker uses the numeric equivalents.
For example, an "A" is represented as "A".
And my website URL,

would be represented as
http://
www.Jam
esSHugg
ins.com
Let's go back to my prior example of cloaking the Amazon.com site. Instead of
http://www.Amazon.com
I'll use
http://
www.Ama
zon.com
You can see this result in my second example page:

Again, check it out. It shows my URL and the Amazon.com site.
And, again click on View / Source and you can see the complete source for the page to see how it is done, but this time the URL is harder to understand because it is "cloaked" in HTML Unicode.
Is There Anything Else?
Yes there is. In addition to the use of frames and the use of HTML Unicode, the Affiliate Link Cloaker does two more things:
1. It adds language to the top of the HTML code to "discourage" people from looking at it. It adds text that says

!STOP! WARNING: you are not authorized to view this Code - Close your text editor immediately

Now, of course, that doesn't really mean anything. But it might stop one or two who don't have a clue.

2. It runs all the code together, eliminating any formatting that might make it easier to figure out.
Again, I've made an example: Check out my third example page:

It still shows my URL and the Amazon.com site.
But, this time, if you click on View / Source you will see the warning message. You will have to scroll down to see the actual code. And the code is more difficult to read because it has all been run together.
So, Does That Really Hide It?
Yes. And no. It hides it. But it doesn't make it all that difficult to figure out.
Anyone using IE 6.0 or later, can just "Right Click" and select "Open Frame in New Window". That will clearly show the affiliate link.
Anyone using an older browser might have to work a bit. But not much.
Still, some people must not know how easy it is to see because people are paying $59.00 to buy the software that does this (see below).
How Can I Make Such A Page?
There are two easy ways.
First, you could buy the Affiliate Link Cloaker. Their site says the software is worth $300.00. But they are only going to charge you $100.00 Then they take three dollars off so you can buy some coffee. Then just for good measure they discount it more . . . to $59.00.
That is one option: pay $59.00.
Another way is to do it for free.
How Can I Do It For Free?
Follow these steps:
1. Get the "Model Page" code in the box below. The easiest way to do that is to put the cursor in the box, then type Ctrl-A (to select all) and then Ctrl-C to copy it all to the clipboard.

2. Paste the code into your own page to create the basic page. Once this is done all you need to do is to change the title and the URL.

3. Change "--TITLE'--" to whatever title you want.

4. Go to tokira.net/unicode or fantomaster.com/fantomasSuite/shadowCoder/fascodersv-e.cgi

5. Use either of these two pages to translate the URL you want to cloak from "normal" characters to HTML Unicode. (For example, you can type "http://www.Amazon.com" in the top and get the cloaked characters at the bottom.

6. Put this cloaked URL in place of --URL-- on your page.

7. Voila. You are done. You have created a cloaked page.

Why I Don't Use This Technique
On this page, I've explained how you can use techniques like this to attempt to hide your affiliate program links from people. And I've given you a free alternative to buying the $59.00 tool.
(Of course, my free approach is slightly more complex than the $59.00 tool. It might take three minutes instead of 45 seconds. And you have to upload the page yourself. But, it is free.)
So, some people asked whether I use this technique.
I do not.In fact, on my pages I use a completely different approach. You see, I believe in being open and honest. When I have an affiliate link, I disclose it. And, I even tell you about it so you can bypass my affiliate link if you don't want me to get any money. I have even created a formal Affiliate Programs Policy that says exactly that.

Don't get me wrong. I participate in affiliate programs. It is just that if my visitor wants to credit their own account instead of mine, or just doesn't want to credit me for some reason, I don't see a personal need to try to trick them. I'd rather just let them do it.
